My work stems from an interest in the relationship between humans and the non-human animal. How we regard other species in relation to ourselves and whether this links to how humans judge and treat each other, as well as non-human animal. I am intrigued by the human repulsion at other humans behaving like the non-human animal, going back to nature, acting on instincts, when we are supposed to behave in a civilized manner superior to that of the non-human animal!
Myths, stories and poems have a strong influence on my work. Seamus Heaney’s poem Bye Child was the main influence and inspiration for The Hen House Boy Series 2006. William Hogarth’s etchings highlighted the story of Mary Tofts; convincing everybody including the king that she was giving birth to rabbits Mary Tofts 2003.
